Youth in ACTion: Through My Eyes/Desde mis Ojos. FREE!
December 15 @ 8:00 pm - 10:00 pm
Paso Nuevo, GALA’s Youth Arts Program, is proud to present THROUGH MY EYES/DESDE MIS OJOS, an evening of original works performed in Spanish with English surtitles, directed by Mauricio Pita. A post-performance discussion with the youth will follow the performance. Admission is free.
In Through My Eyes, a teenager from El Salvador recounts her journey crossing borders to reach the United States. Each stop along the way tackles our youth’s perspectives on issues relating to love, racism, coming out, bullying, self-esteem, immigration, and how to find solidarity and comradery in a dangerous world.
“Through My Eyes,” states Paso Nuevo director Mauricio Pita, “is a series of short scenes conceived by Paso Nuevo participants that reflect the scope of the teenage experience. The show is the culmination of a three month process that brought together ethnically diverse youth from throughout the DC area to explore self-expression through theatre in a safe and supportive space.”
ABOUT PASO NUEVO
Now in its 25th year, Paso Nuevo is GALA’s after-school workshop program for Latino and multi-cultural youth ages 12 to 19. The workshops are held throughout the year and provide a safe environment in which youth can explore issues of identity and cultural differences; articulate their values; increase self-esteem; gain bilingual skills that will enhance their academic performance and future career opportunities; and foster gang prevention activities. Additionally, the youth involved in this project control all aspects of the theatrical process, from conception to technical direction and marketing.
Paso Nuevo is made possible with generous support from the Mayor’s Office on Latino Affairs, The United Way of the National Capital Area, Wells Fargo, the Harman Family Foundation, Congressional Sports for Charity, and the Nationals Dream Foundation.
