DC Immersion Internships and Practicums

Immediate start for a minimum of four months and ideally much longer. Located at DC Immersion’s offices at the Thurgood Marshall Center, 1816 12th Street NW.

Because we are a small and nimble team, in addition to the specific job descriptions below, we expect all team members to pick up some of the administrative tasks and lend their support to others during crunch times. All interns participate in weekly staff meetings and take notes at internal and external meetings. Interns report to Executive Director or Director of Teaching and Learning.

In addition to a sense of humor, all interns must:

Research intern

  • assist with studies conducted internally
  • assist with studies conducted in collaboration with external partners and government agencies
  • help select and refine study measures, develop and implement surveys, collect data, assist in developing analyses plans and prepare a summary of findings.
  • develop fact sheets and brief reports
  • conduct literature searches and reviews
  • help with presentations of research findings, including planning and carrying out the logistics of report release events
  • analyze program data and short and long-term outcomes of programs

Development intern

  • conduct research on potential donors (individuals, foundations, and corporations), map out, conduct background research and solicit
  • identify and research tools to strengthen the team’s ability to conduct thorough and accurate prospect research
  • assist in creation of a fundraising strategy
  • assist in scheduling and preparation of development materials for funder meetings
  • support participant and volunteer recruitment and retention efforts
  • identify, research and solicit local and national businesses for sponsorships, partnership and in kind donations
  • write grant and sponsorship applications
  • enter and update all donation, contact and organization information in chosen database
  • assist in drafting donor communications including acknowledgment letters to donors
  • help organize Board meetings
  • prepare and organize materials for fundraising events
  • write and interview prospective stories

Advocacy and outreach intern

  • coordinate public testimonies and assist in training of advocates
  • engagement and outreach to communities in all 8 wards of the District
  • attend hearings, meetings and other events to track the latest legislative and policy developments
  • schedule regular and ad hoc meetings with decision makers
  • collect public comments and letters for representatives
  • assist with researching, collecting, and organizing information and imagery to capture success stories
  • generate thank-you and ask letters to executive and legislators
  • create and maintain resources for partners and activists including factsheets and toolkits
  • develop and forge relationships with key organizations, offices, and members of the non-profit sector to build a strong coalition for relevant advocacy needs

Communications intern

  • assist in developing and executing social media strategy to build or expand presence on Facebook, Linkedin, twitter and instagram
  • draft monthly e-newsletter
  • write regular website posts and updates
  • edit videos
  • build list of influencers list by media
  • update press contact lists and assist with other contact management activities
  • track news coverage of relevant issues
  • develop media advisories and press releases
  • update database of e-newsletter recipients and track reach and targeting of legislators, education agencies and advocacy groups
  • provide quality control on all external materials, ensuring consistency of message and style
  • respond to information requests
  • assist with compiling reports on the organization’s communications activities and metrics to inform recommendations on how we can best reach and engage our target audiences.
  • support event planning and execution and draft recaps of events

Events intern

  • event design and support – from community meetings to high profile policy panel discussions
  • reach out to partners, exhibitors, sponsors
  • manage all vendors
  • field requests for information
  • be point of contact for speakers, VIPs
  • manage event-related volunteers
  • arrange translation of materials and interpretation as needed
  • coordinate with communication team in the lead up to the event
  • design and administer post event surveys
  • produce reports using event metrics
  • support fundraising events, including but not limited to: location research, designing and sending event invitations, invitation follow-up, tracking RSVPs, and general logistical support
DC Language Immersion Project
