On November 23, 2019, in collaboration with our partners at University of Maryland’s National Foreign Language Center (NFLC), DC Immersion presented on the recently published report, Demographics and Equity of Dual Language Immersion Programs in Washington, D.C. at the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages annual convention.
We were excited to brainstorm equitable access to dual language immersion programs with an engaged audience of teachers and administrators representing a variety of school districts – Arizona, Delaware, Maryland, Nebraska, New York, Rhode Island, Virginia, Washington, D.C., and Washington state.
Attendees were surprised by the research findings, discussed initiatives to increase equity of access, and voiced concerns over the lack of data on the demographics of programs in their own school districts. Many expressed the need to replicate or expand the report’s research within the DC area and in other states across the United States.
